The Demon Drink

Establishing themselves at the forefront of Brisbane’s resurgent live music/beard bar scene the Demon Drink launch their debut single ‘Saturn’s Rings’ at The Triffid on Saturday, 13 May 2017.

The first taste of the quintet’s upcoming debut album – Highway Robbery, ‘Saturn’s Rings’ comes fermented in Finn-worthy melody and bottled in the spirit of seminal, Aussie, cow punk faves, The Johnnys. Perched atop a buoyant beat, a bubbling banjo and featuring Mick Destiny’s sunshine 60’s West Coast guitar, the song (and album) came to life under the hand of producer Jeff Lovejoy (The Cruel Sea, Tex Perkins, Powderfinger) over a frenetic few weeks in late 16-early 17.

Writer and vocalist, Kieran Waters, explains, “The original idea for the lyric was inspired by a friend who was struggling with some personal issues. I’d seen others in the same situation come through it and then people who had not.

“It’s really a variation on the idea that time heals all wounds. Sometimes it doesn’t… Sometimes time runs out.”

The Demon Drink played their first show under the moniker in late 2012. Song writing siblings Kieran and Adrian Waters (AKA Baron Field) had recruited lap-steel player Destiny months earlier and were doing the traps as a 3 piece. Things got serious when bassist Sean O’Shea joined and, in the absence of a suitable drummer, Kieran took up percussion (IE. kick drum) duties. Building repertoire and reputation over the next few years with shows across the eastern seaboard, from Gympie in the North to Sydney in the south (including a now legendary impromptu performance at Woodford Festival’s Pineapple Lounge), the band cemented their line-up, recruiting ‘real’ drummer Leigh (The Lord) Nelson in mid-2016.

With its slapdash strum and lilting immediacy, Saturn’s Rings promises to launch The Demon Drink into a whole new sphere in 2017.
