Few records match the timeless beauty, energy and musical imagination of Rubber Soul and Revolver, The Beatles’ sixth and seventh albums. Oft lauded as two of the greatest pop albums of all time, the inimitable studio masterpieces radically changed pop music; 50 years on their influence is immeasurable and continue to influence and inspire contemporary songsters. Witness now, four of Australian’s most rapidly ascending musical talents – Marlon Williams, Husky Gawenda of Husky, Jordie Lane, and Fergus Linacre of Kingswood – as they take to the stage this July/August in eight very special concerts across Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Canberra, to present the world-first live performances of Rubber Soul and Revolver back to back, in track order.
Released in December 1965, Rubber Soul was the sound of John, Paul, George and Ringo rebelling against convention and making a dazzling leap into new musical territories. Rubber Soul traverses folk-rock, psychedelic rock and forays into world music. Every glowing major-key pop stormer such as “Drive My Car” and “Nowhere Man” is balanced with a counterculture jam, such as the exhilarating, sitar-spiked folk of “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” or the garage-bent “I’m Looking Through You”, announcing The Beatles’ metamorphosis to mature musical craftsmen and distinctly talented songwriters in their own right. Eight months later came the wildly eclectic Revolver, rich in trippy sonic experimentation. The album brims with the band’s new love of Eastern mysticism, as well as the far-reaching influences of Dylan, American R&B and the Byrds, as its fourteen tracks explore pure, hallucinogenic pop (“Yellow Submarine”) and feel-good boogie-woogie (“Good Day Sunshine”), to darker, oft-kilter adventures (“Tomorrow Never Knows”) and thoughtful, pathos-filled songwriting (“Eleanor Rigby”). In 2012 Rolling Stone magazine rated Rubber Soul number five and Revolver number three in the Rolling Stone Top 500 AIbums of All Time.
Bringing the two classics to life at The Beatles’ Rubber Soul / Revolver Concert is a brilliant line-up of Australia and New Zealand’s finest newly emerging musical stars: likened to Sufjan Stevens and Paul Simon, Husky Gawenda is the dazzling lead singer of indie-folk darlings Husky, fresh from opening for acts like Neil Young and The Shins; Jordie Lane, described by Rhythms as “one of Australia’s brightest new roots music stars” possesses the velvety timbre and sombre grace of a young Leonard Cohen; tipped for international stardom, the 24-year-old alt-country troubadour with the voice of an angel, Marlon Williams is currently exploding his album Dark Child garnering ubiquitous five-star reviews; and the spirited Fergus Linacre, front-man of ballsy, rising rock’n’rollers Kingswood returns from the US where he is now based for these very special concerts. Backing them will be a dozen of Australia’s finest musicians, who have to their credit the concerts Beatles Back2Back (Abbey Road and Sergeant Pepper), and The White Album Concert. They’re led by musical director Paul Gray.
The twenty-eight songs of Rubber Soul and Revolver will be performed back to back, in track order, starting with “Drive My Car” and closing with “Tomorrow Never Knows”, superbly presented with state-of-the-art sound production and no gimmicks – just the music.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience the music live as Australia’s finest musicians perform The Beatles’ Rubber Soul / Revolver Concert.
