‘Emerald City’ – Long-Awaited New Album from Knievel
Released September 14
It’s been ten years since Sydney indie pop veterans Knievel released their last album, and those who have already heard‘Emerald City’ agree it’s been worth the wait. The album is set for release on the prestigious Alberts label on September 14.
Knievel is the long-term creative outlet for ARIA award winning producer Wayne Connolly (whose credits include Josh Pyke, Paul Dempsey, You Am I, The Vines, Youthgroup,Hungry Kids of Hungary, The Cairos, and Boy and Bear). Connolly performs vocal and guitar duties with original members Tracy Ellis (bass, vocals), Nick Kennedy (drums) and Tim Kevin (guitar).
Of the recording process Connolly said of ‘Emerald City’, “We spent many late evenings over the last couple of years piecing it together. I’ve been working in the Alberts building for a while now and it’s a very inspiring environment, just having all that music history around you.”
The current single from ‘Emerald City’, called The Time I Found My Feet, is a nostalgic tale about leaving home for the big city. “It’s about that feeling of dislocation and alienation, but also how exciting it is,” says Connolly. It brims with wistful melancholia, subtle guitar interplay and sweet harmonies.
Knievel released their first album ‘We Fear Change’ on the Murmur label in 1995, followed by three more albums independently between 1997 and 2002: ‘Steep Hill Climb’, ‘The Name Rings A Bell That Drowns Out Your Voice’ and ‘No One’s Going To Understand In My Way’. All of Knievel’s singles received extensive airplay on Triple J, including Might As Well Be Gone, Something Good Must Come, Chance Meeting, Don’t Explain and Are You Still Making Progress.
With Emerald City the band members’ collective experience and musical chemistry is evident from the first listen. It’s the finest collection of songs in their career to date – a mature, assured album from a grown-up band held together by their enduring love of music.
