Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War [Sony]
Okay, we were glued to the mini-series and loved the music featured. If you missed it, Howzat! dramatised the emergence of Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket. The soundtrack, while ticking boxes by including tracks featured in the series, falls short of what might have been. Why not go the full Forrest Gump on this, blow the set out to two discs and include material from the era? This collection includes eight great songs, curios from Diana Trash and the Ethiopians, three score pieces from Stephen Rae [which you’ll never play twice] and an edit of the Mojo Singers ‘C’mon Aussie C’mon’. Despite the inclusion of the title track alongside music by The Angels, John Paul Young, Air Supply, Hush and Flash & The Pan, the fun is over before the party really begins. Lovers of the era, hoping to fill a hole in their collection, would be better off splashing out on the superb three-disc Living In The 70’s set [also through Sony]. Close on this one… but no cigar.
