DOCTOR WHO – what, where and why – Celebrating 50 years
Doctor Who was first broadcast in the UK on BBC One at 5.15pm on Saturday November 23, 1963. Created as an educational family show to fit between the football results and evening entertainment programs, Doctor Who was the brainchild of Canadian TV producer and BBC Head of Drama, Sydney Newman.

When the First Doctor William Hartnell wanted to leave the series after three years, the idea of renewing their leading man was born.  After an initial run of 26 years, the series was rested. It returned for a one-off TV movie featuring the Eighth Doctor in 1996. Doctor Who was fully resurrected in 2005 and has gone from strength to strength ever since. In its 50th anniversary year, the series is watched by an estimated 80 million viewers in 206 countries. It has been honoured by Guinness World Records as both the longest running and most successful science-fiction series in the world.

DOCTOR WHO and AUSTRALIA
Doctor Who was first screened in Australia in January 1965 on ABC Television.  The broadcaster has screened every series, barring only a handful of episodes.

Two Australian writers played key roles in the gestation of the whole series, C.E. “Bunny” Webber, and Anthony Coburn, who worked on the pre-production and first story.

The iconic Doctor Who theme music, was written by an Australian musician Ron Grainer (a Queenslander), and one-time Australian Ballet composer, Dudley Simpson, wrote the incidental music for a great number of stories in the 1960s and 1970s.

There have been many Australians who have appeared in the show including Janet Fielding who played the popular companion, Tegan, in the 1980s, Gai Waterhouse, Kylie Minogue and Adam Garcia.
