EMI have released a Best Of Bond … James Bond/50th Anniversary Collection. There are two versions in the market place. We’ve got the single disc set, which includes every theme song bar Adele’s recent effort for Skyfall. It’s hard to pick favourites, but the quality dips a little after Duran Duran’s A View To A Kill. If push comes to shove we’re pushing for Shirley Bassey’s Diamonds Are Forever as the best: which just pips her own Goldfinger, Paul McCartney’s Live And Let Die and Nancy Sinatra’s You Only Love Twice.
Still on EMI, the company have commissioned a terrific run of lower price [under $20] box sets from high profile artists. One that caught our fancy immediately was the Roxy Music collection. Featuring two live albums and three studio records, the collection includes Siren, Manifesto, Flesh + Blood, Viva! and Heart Still Beating. Between the records you’ll find such staples as ‘Love Is The drug’, ‘Angel Eyes’, ‘Same Old Scene’, ‘Over You’ and a scorching live take on Neil Young’s ‘Like A Hurricane’.
We love a good compilation and while the 80’s pop revival remains in full swing it’s hard to go past 101 80’s Hits/Platinum Edition [EMI]. The set spans 5 CDs. Tunes are culled from the heights of power pop through to the bitter end. There’s an Australian contingent [the collection opens with Farnham’s You’re The Voice] and plenty more from the Brits and yanks. Here are a few for size: Falco ‘Rock Me Amadeus’, Ray Parker Jnr ‘Ghostbusters’, Wham! ‘Freedom’, Talking Heads ‘Road To Nowhere’, Stray Cats ‘Runaway Boys’, A Flock Of Seagulls ‘I Ran’, Martika ‘Tin Soldiers’ and The Little Heroes ‘One Perfect Day’.
