MARVEL UP LATE
Comic book aficionados, and fans of super heroes on the big screen, are well aware of the joys that Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe, the exhibition currently running at QAGOMA, brings. Now, the whole shebang, if it’s possible, has gotten a whole lot better with the unveiling of the Marvel Up Late program – which delivers a fresh take on the exhibition by adding music and exciting behind-the-scenes talks on Friday nights starting from 5.30pm.
GOMA’s Up Late events have always been about having a good time, and Marvel Up Late is no different: visitors can grab a drink and roam the exhibition – taking in the beautiful set pieces, props, costumes and multimedia activities – enjoy a bite to eat or enjoy the live music until closing time.
The major heroes are all covered in the exhibition: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor – even Doctor Strange and Ant-Man are all on show. Avid fans of the comics-turned-to-film will recognise plenty of costumes, weapons and locations, while the uninitiated should still find it easy to appreciate the detail put into the props.
Last Friday saw Brisbane-based scenic painter Camille Serisier elaborate on the craftsmanship behind her work, tying into the imposing throne room set which will feature in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, (parts of which were filmed in our own beautiful Brisbane). Serisier made speculations on the material used for parts of the throne room and gave insight into the process behind planning, crafting and assembling the various pieces, sharing her techniques along the way.
DJ Emma Stevenson provided attendees with songs from her extensive vinyl collection before handing over the stage to Melbourne duo Habits whose “sad goth party jams” (that’s their own description!) kept the crowd entertained until closing time. Since releasing their promising debut EP Ugly Cry in 2016, Habits have been hard at work, having recently released the single Shame / Desire. The duo will tour Australia starting next month, stopping over in Brisbane again for those who missed them.
