Back to Back, Track for Track | 2015 Australian Tour
My Friend the Chocolate Cake announce their “Back to Back, Track for Track” national tour in 2015, performing their first two albums back to back – the eponymous debut release ‘My Friend The Chocolate Cake’ (1991) and ‘Brood’ (1994). Their debut LP was recorded in a day – as a side project for David Bridie and Helen Mountfort’s band Not Drowning Waving – and there was a freeness in how the band played the songs. As Bridie says “there’s lumpy bits all over the place, it cost 1200 dollars to make and is probably our most successful album”, featuring the track ‘Danny Boy’. Having played songs from this release for over 25 years, MFTCC will be dusting off a few of the less played numbers such as ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ and John Cale’s ‘Buffalo Ballet’. Their second release ‘Brood’ was recorded in Melbourne mixed in New York at Tom Verlaine’s Soho loft studio complete with a bathroom that played Mahler, a Goth studio manager and tarantulas. ‘Brood’ has the band’s most successful song to date on it – ‘I’ve got a plan’ – as well ‘Throwing It Away’, their ode to the Kennett era, ‘Song from Under the Floorboards’ and ‘Jimmy Stynes’.
David Bridie says “we’ve seen other bands play a particular landmark album in its entirety and in order. We think it’s a grand idea. So in the spirit of the magpie we are pilfering this idea and making it our own. Our long lost mandolin player Andrew Carswell, who left the band to join the Scottish lawn bowls team for the Commonwealth Games and to play occasional gigs with the wonderful Stetsons, is going to re-join us. We’ve missed his wonderful melodies, tin whistle and dry wit.”

Singer/songwriter and pianist David Bridie, alongside the glorious strings of Helen Mountfort’s cello and Hope Csutoros’ violin are high in the curious collision of elements that have made MFTCC a failsafe concert draw, triple ARIA winners and a vivid presence on countless film and TV soundtracks these last two and a half decades. Their seven-album history is a multi-dimensional mural of modern Australia that illustrates its geography, its political mores and its predominantly suburban identity.
