After making history together in 2013 with the highest charting Indigenous language single of all time, top five hit “Bayini”, Gurrumul and Delta Goodrem struck up a long-term friendship which has resulted this year in another special collaboration – this time a celebration of Christmas with “Silent Night”. 

The coupling of Australia’s highest ever selling female artist with the Indigenous singer songwriter dubbed by Rolling Stone as “Australia’s most important voice” has created a traditional masterpiece celebrating the holiday season in both English and Yolngu languages. 

“I treasure all the opportunities I have had to sing with Gurrumul,” said Delta Goodrem. “His voice is sublime. Christmas is such a special time for me and to share time in the studio with Gurrumul always means our musical spirit and kinship takes over. I hope everyone enjoys Silent Night as much as we did recording it”. 

 “After their unlikely partnering for the historic performance on The Voice last year, Gurrumul and Delta have struck up a wonderful friendship and when the opportunity to collaborate again to celebrate Christmas came about, Gurrumul jumped at the opportunity. He was physically laughing with excitement during the session,” said Michael Hohnen, Gurrumul’s long-time musical collaborator, “Their voices blend so beautifully and it’s quite special to witness the harmony and language of two people from such different worlds joining to celebrate Christmas together. Gurrumul feels like his wider Yolngu community of 10,000 people can now feel like they are part of the mainstream Australian Christmas celebration and with Delta’s spirit he feels blessed to be involved.” 

After premiering the song live at Gurrumul’s recent Sydney Opera House shows, the track is available now on this year’s Myer Spirit of Christmas with all proceeds going to The Salvation Army or So Fresh Songs For Christmas with proceeds going to the Gurrumul Yunupingu Foundation.
