The Australian premiere of The Inbetweeners 2 saw the four raunchiest lads in Britain hit the Gold Coast, along with one half of the writer/director team Ian Morris. TOM Magazine caught them on the red carpet for a quick chat about the film and their characters (and why this is the last time we’ll see The Inbetweeners).

TOM: Do you think your characters will ever grow up?

Simon: No, I think…this is the final Inbetweeners film.
James: Unfortunately they do grow up so this is why we have to end it.

TOM: Well, if there was another one, where would you like to see The Inbetweeners go next?

James: The moon.
Blake: A travel lodge.
Joe: Afterlife.
Simon: Valhalla.

TOM: Is there anything about Australia that you think makes it good for comedy?

Blake: I think it was because it puts the boys kind of in genuine danger. And their characters are so inadequate that when you compare them to most Aussie blokes they’re even more inadequate.

Simon: The other thing it has is a lot of British people, so the boys just kind of hang out with people from England. People come here to try and find themselves don’t they because it’s so un-mutable. So it’s perfect for a film because the location is so out there, you need to watch it on the big screen. It takes The Inbetweeners to the next level.

TOM: Any issues with filming in the outback?

Simon: Quite a lot of flies…don’t know if you’ve heard but the outback is quite warm. It can get a bit balmy out there.

Joe: We’re sort of so well taken care of the whole time that we’re not really exposed to danger directly, but you know, James got sunburnt one day, so that was sort of the closest we got.

Blake: Acting with flies crawling in your eyes, ears, nose, mouth was difficult.

TOM: That’s just life for us.

Joe: This was sort of beyond belief for us. It’s amazing we were able to use any of that footage because I could feel six or seven flies in my eyes.

The horniest lads in England have landed smack bang into the middle of the Aussie outback. What could go wrong? Lot’s, it turns out. Lots of mostly hilarious, tits out events that never really seem to add up to much, but are fun nonetheless to watch.

The Inbetweeners 2 sees Simon, Will and Neil trek to Australia where Jay is enjoying a ‘men-nal gap year’ as a resident DJ, living in his canal-side mansion and enjoying the fruits of attractive local women. In reality, the trio rock up to Jay’s sent pitched in his uncle’s backyard, and discover that in fact he’s still pining for Jane (his love interest from the first film) who dumped him on his arse and ran off too Australia for her own gap year. Whilst the foursome backpack around Australia searching for her, Simon is dealing with his bonkers girlfriend Lucy (also from the first) – and, by some miracle of god, Will finds another attractive blonde love interest in primary school pal Katie.

The humour is disgusting, rude and some jokes are horrendously taboo – they’ll have your hand clasped over your mouth in shock. However, it’s the same formula as the first film and the show, so if you liked them, you’ll like this. There are some absolute standout moments, most involving British stickler Simon having to deal with hippy dippy backpacker rituals such as the douche with the guitar around the campfire, a therapeutic negative energy exercise and of the course the awkward situations with girls he constantly falls into (plus one of the funniest poop gags this reviewer’s ever seen).

The majority of the film is quick-witted and funny, but there are some jokes that absolutely drag – predominantly in the films last quarter where the boys find themselves out in the sticks. Things seem to take a turn for the uncharacteristically serious – to ultimately be relieved by comedy, but nonetheless it drags us through the dirt to get there.

If you’ve seen The Inbetweeners  film and the show, you know what you’re in for.  It’s funny, it rags on Australians like you wouldn’t believe, there are pretty girls, dick and balls jokes and the usual fare. Not as good as the first, but still a great time at the cinema.
