Barefoot Divas

Brisbane Powerhouse                   26-07-13

It had been a while since this reviewer ventured to the beautiful Brisbane Powerhouse, however, as soon as I stepped foot into that familiar theatre a special feeling washed over me- this would be no ordinary show.

Barefoot Divas: Walk A Mile In My Shoes is one of the most breathtakingly emotional, profoundly poignant and overwhelmingly beautiful productions I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Six Indigenous women, six spirits of song and six exquisite voices; the Barefoot Divas each carry their own unique stories, languages, emotions and songs to the stage; together delivering a powerhouse (excuse the pun) performance.

Comprising of extraordinary women from all walks of life, the audience is taken on a journey of survival, identity, cultural diversity, loss and love- with the added touch of a little girl power! With an incredible 5 piece band in tow, Ursula Yovich, Emma Donovan, Ngaiire, Maisey Rika, Whirimako Black and Merenia journey through a variety of genres and languages and there’s never a dull moment with the ‘deadly’ banter between the ‘sistas!’

Spine-tingling, humorous, heartbreaking yet also heartwarming- Walk A Mile In My Shoes will stir the bottom of your soul and leave you with a plethora of emotions you weren’t aware you were capable of all at once. The Barefoot Divas Walk A Mile In My Shoes is a production not to miss! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, overwhelmingly beautiful. It is performances like these that allow us to experience the true power of music.
